#8 Traits every leader should have

Being a leader of a group or just to a person is just more than just telling people what to do, you don't have to be in-charge to become a leader either. But it does take skill and certain traits to become a successful leader. I believe that every leader should have these traits in their arsenal.

1. Leading by Example:

Leading by example may sound easy but only a few leaders could be successful and consistent with this. Practicing what they preach with their action is very difficult particularly for new leaders.

2. Letting others speak

A successful leader will encourage others to speak up. They will listen to what others say and understand others perspectives as well. They are true professionals and make sure that the environment is comfortable for everyone to share their opinions and views. By giving the freedom of sharing their opinions they encourage the team to be more innovative and creative.

3. Continuous and honest feedback:

Providing continuous and honest feedback would help team members to identify their areas of improvement. Also, remember it should happen in both ways. True leaders should also seek the feedback from their team members to get to know about their areas of improvement. They will also analyze the same and act on it if required.

4.Recommendation and rewards:

Retaining talents is one of the main objectives of a good team leader. The reward doesn't mean to be monetary and can just be an appreciation through an email or an appreciation in a team meeting. This would alleviate the team's motivation. It is important to be open, honest and unbiased while recognizing and rewarding the team members.

  1. Hi!
I really liked this blog post. I don't typically see myself as a leader, but after reading this, I slowly started to realize that I might have the characteristics a leader needs. Thanks!

  2. I think your second point is particularly important. I've seen too many groups fall apart because somebody wanted to be "the boss" and refused to take input from others. I think this is the most important point on the list, as too many people are so focused on leading, that they forget what it means to be a leader.
